2020 Job Task Analysis
September 30, 2020 – A job task analysis study was completed in September 2020 to describe the job functions of a Board Certified Medication Therapy Management Specialist (BCMTMS). The study provides the foundation for the BCMTMS exam blueprint, which assesses the practice-related knowledge of professionals seeking certification as a requirement as a medication therapy management pharmacist. All BCMTMS examination questions are based on the exam content outline.
A job analysis consists of a thorough analysis of the job duties and knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics required for success in a specific position. Job experts or subject matter experts (SME) are qualified job incumbents who perform, train, or supervise persons employed in the target position. In general, SMEs chosen should collectively represent the demographics of the industry population (concerning gender, age, race, years of experience, etc.).
BACKGROUND AND FINDINGS
NBMTM’s 2020 Job Task Analysis (JTA) was completed in September 2020, and the examination content outline will take effect in January 2021. The research revealed insights into the tasks being performed by pharmacists directly involved in the field of medication therapy management and the knowledge requirements needed to fulfill and serve the interests of patients and the public. Its results were used to verify and update the content of the BCMTMS examination and education requirements.
The JTA research incorporated a method approach that involved several subject-matter experts, an analysis of emerging trends in the profession, and a large-scale survey of pharmacy practitioners.

The 2020 Job Task Analysis results included an updated list of Tasks and Knowledge. The Knowledge are the basis of the BCMTMS Certification Examination blueprint, serve as the curricular framework for BCMTMS education requirement, and represent the topics NBMTM will accept for continuing education credit.
