An Overview of MTM Certification

MTM Certification, also known as Board Certification in Medication Therapy Management, is a voluntary process that demonstrates expertise in a specific pharmacy specialty.

The National Board of Medication Therapy Management is an independent, not-for-profit, and pharmacist-led organization that provides pharmacists with a voluntary pathway to earn a board certification credential. It differs from licensure to practice pharmacy, which is regulated by state government.

Being an MTM pharmacist requires more than assessing medications for indication, effectiveness, safety, and adherence issues. It also involves patient counseling that considers the patient’s emotional, financial, and cultural state.

Certified MTM pharmacists, or Board Certified Medication Therapy Management Specialists (BCMTMS™), must pass an examination established by the National Board of Medication Therapy Management. Upon passing the exam, the pharmacist will be granted Board Certification. The Certification is renewable after five years if the pharmacist maintains an active license and meets the standards for recertification.

Professional Designation

The National Board Certificate in Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is a professional designation that distinguishes pharmacists with a voluntary credential beyond entry-level licensure. The Board Certified Medication Therapy Management Specialist (BCMTMS™) demonstrates advanced skills in handling complex patient care scenarios that can only be learned through experience and advanced training.
A BCMTMS™ demonstrates to patients and prospective patients that the service they can expect to receive will be provided by a board certified pharmacist who has mastered the core competencies required to provide the best care possible.

Our Purpose

The National Board of Medication Therapy Management (NBMTM) was founded in response to the need for a valid MTM certification process.
The purpose of board certification by the NBMTM is to provide assurance to the public and the pharmacy profession that a board certified pharmacist in medication therapy management has successfully completed an accredited educational program and evaluation process, including a secure and proctored examination.
The NBMTM is responsible for establishing and maintaining the standards of knowledge required for certification.
